The Position:

First Look Media and Topic Studios are seeking a Director, Podcasts, to join the team in the company’s New York, NY, office. The role will report to the VP/Executive Producer, Podcasts, as a foundational part of a growing studio vertical. The ideal candidate will be passionate about audio storytelling and production, knowledgeable and opinionated about the rapidly evolving podcast industry, and proactive and self-motivated. They should have meaningful development and production experience at a premium podcast outlet (production company or buyer/network), strong project management and excellent communication skills, and sophisticated taste that aligns with Topic Studios’ creative vision. They should feel at home in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. The Director will work closely with the VP, across company departments, and with external partners to produce new podcasts and take them to market, shaping and managing Podcasts’ creative brand and business strategy, as part of overall studio strategy alongside Topic Studios’ Film, Original Series, and Nonfiction verticals.

Responsibilities:

In a key creative capacity, work closely with VP and other key team members to develop and implement podcast vertical strategy and slate of projects. Help select and build shows that align with and strengthen Topic Podcasts’ voice and brand, including: solicit and review submissions for development and production; identify and work with show creators and talent, including those new to podcasting; give notes on source material for development and production (story, scripts, sizzles and other audio material, pitch materials, and more); and help to oversee day-to-day progress on projects with creators, VP, and distributors. Help ready shows to be brought to market at a brisk pace for a growing business. Once shows are sold, help VP oversee development and production with creatives, in-house Production team, and external production staff, and manage relationships with buyers/distributors. Work proactively with Topic Studios’ Production vertical to manage schedule, workflow, and budgeting across a number of shows; help oversee creative processes in collaboration with show teams; and collect and review deliverables in compliance with distributors’ standards and relevant release needs. Help the VP oversee the fulfillment of launch, marketing, and distribution obligations with relevant internal and external partners. Manage and help direct key aspects of podcast monetization strategy, including sponsorship processes. Build and manage relationships with buyers, talent, production companies and professionals, and other key partners; track and communicate competitive landscape and industry news and trends. Initiate and support partnerships with other Studio verticals (e.g., TV, Film) to create podcasts from Studio IP, cross-promote shows, and provide source material for shows in other formats derived from Topic podcasts. Attend Studio, vertical, and show-specific meetings and maintain notes and general vertical documentation/records. Other appropriately related projects/duties as assigned. Background & Qualifications:

5+ years of experience in podcasting and/or the audio industry. Proven knowledge of podcast formats and genres and expertise in the mechanics of podcast creative production, distribution, marketing, and monetization. Strong analytical and written communication skills, applied to assessing creative material for internal discussion, delivering creative thoughts to talent, and editorial comments for pitch materials. High degree of urgency with regard to communication and in service of helping to grow the business. Strong knowledge of and interest in the podcast industry, including awareness of — and preferably meaningful existing relationships across — podcast networks, producers and production companies, writers and other talent, and other major players in the space. A demonstrated creative point of view, comfort with a wide variety of genres, and the ability to generate creative ideas, provide notes, and build and manage production processes. Superior organizational and prioritization skills. Team player. College degree in a relevant field.
