Producer for Entrepreneurship Podcast
A project or contract Producer position
Fully remote: working with a UK-based team at Cofruition.
Salary range: £35.00 to £40.00 (hourly rate) - subject to experience
Summary
- Cofruition have been hired by an organisation to help make a podcast about entrepreneurship and the challenges of founding a company.
- We are seeking a freelance producer to help make the podcast more than "just another interview podcast"
- The show will be a fairly laidback discussion between two regular hosts, followed by two features; a ~10 minute guest interview and a write-in “agony aunt” segment
- Alongside your creative skills, you should have an interest in business and entrepreneurship. Experience in the sector is even better!
How we work
Cofruition's guiding principle is "don't get spread too thin" and as such you'll be joining a team where you can focus your attention and creativity on making high quality content.
Your tasks
The client has already done a lot of the groundwork in terms of planning out the series, which we will share with you upon accepting the role. Your job will be to turn that plan into great recordings and then work with an editor to turn them into a slick podcast.
In practice:
- Research: the client has provided some background reading on the topics in question. You may need to read through this in order to develop good ideas to discuss
- Work with client on questions: as part of the episode preparation you’ll help develop the episode plan. While the body of the episodes won’t be scripted, you’ll need to prepare an outline of how you want the discussion to progress
- Write a script for the intro and outro: These will be recorded along with the rest of the episode and will be the only scripted parts of the show
- Soundcheck and guide the interview: While we can always edit things out, we are aiming to record the episodes “as live” with breaks between the features. The recordings will take place on Riverside. We can teach you how to soundcheck if you’re unsure
- Listen to the recording; identify any edits that need to be made: We use Descript for this part of the process, which we’ll train you on
- Oversee the editor: one of our audio editors will take the raw clips and mix them together into an episode, implementing your instructions. You'll then work through revisions with the editor
- Finalise the episode: from experience, the audio editor will likely get the episode to ~98% after a couple of revisions. If you have experience using Adobe Audition/ Audacity then you can do the final 2% yourself
- Identify additional content: for example a 45 second audio clip to be a "teaser" and a quote that can be used in social media posts
The Cofruition project manager will deal with ensuring that deadlines are met, overseeing the production and being your main point of contact during the production process.
Training
Before working on the project, the Cofruition team will take you through our training program so that you're clear on how to make podcasts "the Cofruition way". Once you've done this training, it'll obviously also be easy for you to work on other projects in the future!
This training involves learning the software we use and how to write episode outlines using our template. There are a couple of tasks to work through with the project manager which, factoring in feedback etc., can usually get done over the course of a week.
Practical information
- Limited series of 5 episodes with a view to further work: the client has signed up for 5 episodes and has no plans for future series of this particular show. However, we have other upcoming podcasts that require producers. If we’re happy with your work and you’re interested in continuing, we’d look to move you onto one of these after this project is completed
- Recording from mid-June to early-July. Launching in August. We are aiming to have the majority of the production work on all episodes finished by launch day.
- £300 per episode: we pay on a per episode basis, to be invoiced after the completion of your tasks for each episode. This means you don’t have to wait until an episode is released in order to get paid
- ~6-12 hours work per episode: as you'll be focusing on the creative aspect of producing the episode we have found, from experience, that this takes our producers 6-12 hours. You can set your own schedule based on the various deadlines we need to hit, and we work remotely by default
- Additional ~6-12 hours of set up: we set aside some time for work that isn’t directly related to one episode or another, but still needs doing. This includes things like meeting with the client and getting up to speed with our producer training. This is paid like an episode - an additional £300 to be invoiced once episode 1 is completed
- Begin immediately: we are working through the set up of the podcast with the client at the moment. Once you have completed the training you can begin playing a more active role in the podcast
More information about the theme, host, topics etc. will be shared once you start on the project.
