Chief Content Officer, APM Studios

POSITION SUMMARY:

American Public Media’s On-Demand Division is a rapidly growing arm of our core content business. We are seeking a Chief Content Officer (CCO) to define the editorial vision and implement a comprehensive content strategy across all podcast, digital, on demand, and podcast-derivative video and brand extension products from APM Studios. This role will be the senior lead in overseeing podcast and series-supportive productions, acquisitions, and internal and external content partnerships for APM Studios. Our ideal candidate is an executive with extensive experience in public media, a proven track record of growing audience via a portfolio of successfully launched digital media properties, and familiarity with the rapidly growing on-demand space.

Compensation: Exact salary will be determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, geographic location and internal equity.

OBJECTIVES

Significantly increase APM Studio’s national and international audience by developing an expanded and diverse podcast portfolio that serves specific audience targets and earns their loyalty Collaborate with the GM and COO in setting and driving organizational and editorial vision and ambitious long-term audience and revenue growth plan Build a highly inclusive and creative culture that ensures team members thrive and brings new talent into the organization Translate strategy into actionable goals and KPIs for content teams Be a champion of APM’s values

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Set editorial vision and brand voice for APM Studios’ podcasts and podcast-driven product development across multi-media platforms and formats Creative oversight of original and acquired podcasts that deliver on intentional audience targets, have a broad appeal across new and growing on-demand audience segments, and provides top line revenue growth opportunities Shape and transform APM’s wealth of journalism, original storytelling, and unique perspectives into listen-first experiences for new entrants and highly devoted APM podcast listeners. Develop a comprehensive content strategy for pod-first products, including social and digital editorial content that is series-supportive and intentionally focused on platform-specific audience and engagement Continue to lead APM Studios to make its work even more digitally focused and nimble, in part by helping drive a clear vision for prioritizing workflows that support digital storytelling. Build, lead and manage an ambitious, creative editorial staff, including senior and junior-level audio producers, editors, development producers and freelancers overseeing pan-portfolio and category-specific content Foster a creative and productive work environment geared to serving the needs of APM’s audience and organizational goals while also advancing staff members’ professional growth. Advocate for APM Studios’ content needs with key stakeholders, including COO and GM. Stay abreast of innovations in the content and media world, such as emerging communication and delivery platforms. Partner with Audience Insights and Marketing to stay on top of consumer insights, digital platform and content trends, and focus group testing results on new show concepts and pilots in development for APM Studios Collaborate with Brand Solutions Sales Lead to gain insights on what clients and brand partners value in APM content and audience deliverables Work with Research and Marketing to forecast and track against podcast audience and content goals

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

10+ years’ experience in media 4+ years management experience Demonstrated ability with multi-platform content. Track record of developing and launching innovative editorial products. Demonstrated leadership and people management skills. Ability to motivate staff and develop high performing, diverse teams with a focus on inclusion. Exceptional communication skills Leadership skills, with steadfast resolve and personal integrity Strong storytelling and journalism background. Strong knowledge of media trends, including changing audience habits, emerging content platforms and the public media industry's competitive environment. Disciplined management style, an accessible personality, and the ability to effectively lead change.

PHYSICAL DEMAND AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to manage some work outside of standard office hours as needed. Physical Demands: Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time Required to move about in the community Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping Working Conditions: Moderate noise level
